Determine the immune responses to Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, that are responsible for induction of protection, arthritis and chronicity; clinical and diagnostic microbiology and immunology of infectious agents; and development of rapid procedures for detection of bacterial diseases. Dr. Schell is also Chief Bacteriologist at the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene, the reference bacteriology laboratory for the State of Wisconsin.
